Training

Training for VCS groups forms a significant part of the work of Young Lives and workforce development is part of that.  Workforce Development is mainly about ensuring people have the skills to do their job. It is about providing support and advice. Workforce development should be an enjoyable process of continuous learning to help workers develop themselves and reach their full potential. It is also about recruiting, developing and keeping staff to help your organisation achieve its objectives. Workforce development also applies to volunteers, trustees and representatives.

Wakefield's Common Assessment Framework (CAF)

CAF is an interagency initiative to improve the way in which we work together to provide children/young people and their families with the most appropriate services to safeguard children and to promote their well-being. It is the prime mechanism for information sharing within Wakefield. It covers all children/young people from the provision of universal services to those who have additional, special needs and those in need of protection. This model was developed by the Wakefield Children and Young People's Strategic Partnership in response to research and areas of good practice, which have shown that early intervention and joint working, can significantly reduce the need for statutory intervention. Bolton's Child Concern Model is one such example and the Wakefield Common Assessment Framework Model had been largely based on this. It also meets the Government requirements outlined in Every Child Matters and provides guidance on identifying lead professionals, sharing information and the Common Assessment Framework model. The way in which CAF is used continues to evolve to allow it to be more user friendly, gather information and give the best possible outcomes to children and young people.

Youth Justice interactive learning space

The Youth Justice Interactive Learning Space is a web-based youth justice 'college' that has been developed by the YJB in collaboration with the Open University. It has been designed so that courses are interactive and enable learning that takes account of each learner's requirements in a way that is not as ‘academically intense' as other accredited courses that are part of the National Qualifications Framework. It is hoped that this new online approach to learning will extend significantly the current range of learning opportunities for all who work in the youth justice system. Access to the YJILS is available to all youth offending teams (YOTs). However, it is envisaged that everyone working or volunteering within the youth justice system will have access as the system is developed, and will be available within the secure estate in 2011.
